Daniel Akpeyi was not expected to play regularly at Naturena following his move from Chippa United, however Itumeleng Khune’s injury woes have meant that he has gone on to become Ernst Middendorp’s most used goalkeeper.
The Nigerian shot-stopper has put in some impressive performances for the Glamour Boys over the course of the 2019/20 season so far, and has made some big saves – including numerous penalty stops – to make sure that Chiefs end the year on top of the Absa Premiership.
Bobby Motaung, Amakhosi’s football manager, praised the team as a whole for their efforts so far this season, also mentioning Middendorp’s trio of awards that he picked up.
Motaung told the club’s official website, “The team did the business on the field of play – thank you to the team for their hard work. I’m happy for the teamwork as well as outstanding individual contributions. The coach has been recognised on three consecutive occasions as Absa Premiership Coach of the Month. Daniel Akpeyi came to the party when Itumeleng Khune got injured. I’m glad he’s been recognised with Player of the Month accolade.”
Meanwhile, as we prepare to say goodbye to the year and the decade tonight, Motaung added, “As we close off 2019, let us look forward to the new year with the same energy. The support and the energy from the streets, messages and singing and dancing at the stadium rubbed off the team to perform on the field of play… I wish everyone a happy crossover to 2020. Let the journey continue in the same spirit and unity.”
